Core features

8 features from provider sources · sources reviewed on 30 September 2026. Availability and limitations are listed directly below.

  • Edit files and run commands

Claude Code reads a codebase, changes files, and runs development commands and tests in the shared project.

  • Project rules and memory

CLAUDE.md describes project requirements. Auto Memory records findings; existing AGENTS.md rules can also be included.

  • Skills and slash commands

Skills bundle instructions and supporting files for recurring tasks. They can be invoked directly or used when relevant to the task.

    Source 3
  • Hooks for agent events

Hooks run configured actions at defined events, such as checks before tool calls or after file changes.

    Source 4
  • MCP connections

MCP connects Claude Code to external tools and data sources, such as tickets, documentation, or your own services.

Requirements and limits

‘Still open’ means the reviewed sources do not answer this point clearly.

  • Requirement

    Local installation with internet access

The CLI requires a supported operating system, at least 4 GB of RAM, and an internet connection.

    Source 5
  • Requirement

    Write and execution permissions

In manual mode, sessions start with read access. File changes and commands require approval; settings and organization rules determine the scope.

    Source 6
  • Limitation

Desktop access requires a paid subscription

The desktop app already includes Claude Code. Anthropic requires a paid subscription for this access method; other access methods have their own requirements.

Practical tasks

Editorial examples based on documented features. No product tests performed.

01

Fix bugs and test

Your input
Reproducible error, repository, and project rules.
Possible result
A focused diff with tests and remaining uncertainties.
What to check
Reproduce the bug; review behavior and changes.
02

Recurring code review

Your input
Review skill, repository, and permitted review scope.
Possible result
A prioritized report with references and proposed changes.
What to check
Review findings and decide before merging.
EDITORIAL EXAMPLE

Prepare a clearly limited bug fix with a traceable diff and relevant tests.

Your possible prompt

Read the project rules. Investigate [error], propose a small change, and run the relevant checks. Show me the diff and any remaining uncertainties.

Getting-started idea based on documented capabilities. Not an executed product test. Adapt the task, data, and permissions.

04

What you should know first

CLI, IDE, desktop, and web have different requirements. Routines and local schedules differ in execution and availability.

Requirements & limitations

Review code, tests, and changes. Permissions, execution environment, and available features depend on configuration and access.

Setup

Provide project rules, repository, and task.

Pricing model

Plan / usage. Check current terms and included quotas with the provider.

The classification indicates the scope of effort. It is not a price or performance commitment.
